The Center for Research in Arts and Multimedia – NIAM carries out its research in a broad thematic area. It aims to promote, stimulate, support and disseminate research in areas related to the arts and new media, in close proximity to science, heritage and culture, carrying out research work that contributes to the development and dissemination of knowledge, with the central focus on integration artistic and technological dimensions.

NIAM intends to consolidate the efforts of a group of teachers/researchers and students from ISCE Douro, with the aim of using their human, scientific and technological potential as host entities for the development of knowledge and implementation of research and investigation projects.

The nucleus develops exploratory research in areas that cross several thematic axes, where artistic products and their current practice, as well as their reflection, can contribute to the sociocultural growth of the regions where the activities are implemented – increasing the production and transmission of the arts .

| Research Areas

PP and NIAM members participate in a wide range of exploratory and/or scholastic projects, practices and collaborations in the following areas of action:

  • Dissemination;

  • Forum;

  • Learning;

  • Public Participation.

Artistic research is distinguishable from other forms of academic research by the specificity of the artistic work. Research is closely linked to design, practice and materials. The methods are born from this immersion. Ideas and objects are inseparable and have no hierarchy. Ideas and objects are at the same time producers of matter and discourse. The research question derives from the artistic practice of the artist-researcher. Research produces knowledge, experiences and understanding that cannot be obtained by other means. Objective and subjective discourse and practice are an integral part of the way of understanding and investigating the universe of arts. They are manifest in works of art and in artistic practices themselves. Under these guidelines, this stream of research contributes to the feeding of most praxis/poiesis, dissemination, forum, learning and engagement activities and is interconnected in the other thematic research lines.
