| Presentation of the Course

This study cycle aims to train professionals with fundamental skills in Sport. It is intended that sports graduates provide specialized technical support to regular practitioners of sport and physical activity, with the aim of improving their performance in the sporting context (educational training/competitive performance) and physical exercise (fitness – better health and condition physical/wellness – health and well-being). It aims to train professionals capable of mastering the scientific, humanistic, artistic, social and cultural content necessary to carry out their role in favor of the success of two groups that come to work. Throughout training, the assumption of investigative attitudes and practices will be promoted, through the stimulation of curiosity and the joy of knowing,

The degree in Sports at ISCE Douro has two optional profiles, namely Sports Training and Physical Conditioning. In the sports training option, the study program profile includes the development of technical-scientific and professional knowledge in the study areas of sports training and preparation for individual and collective competition. In the physical fitness option, the study program profile includes the development of technical-scientific and professional knowledge in the study areas of physical preparation for better health.

| Learning Goals

In the study cycle profile, students must be able to:

  • Demonstrate professionalism and effectiveness in your intervention in contexts in which sport, as a plural and diverse object, is embodied in activities aimed at sporting performance, physical condition and recreation, mobilizing knowledge, skills and competencies necessary for a systemic analysis of situations and resolution of problems.

  • Demonstrate rigor in guiding, monitoring and training people and groups, revealing or mastering specific sporting knowledge and techniques, according to properly designed and developed programs, without scrupulously respecting the principles required of holders of the professional title of coach in a given sport.

  • Design, develop and manage projects in which intervention in physical fitness and sports are crucial for promoting healthy lifestyles and well-being.

  • Demonstrate an investigative attitude, a perspective of integration of two knowledge, skills and competences that do not surround me, in the specific context in which their activity takes place and with two individuals and/or populations with whom they work, combining extension activities with the community and scientific research and production of confectionery products.

  • Reveal the integrated mastery of two knowledge, skills and competences specific to sporting practice, which constitute an aspect of the development of physical condition, that of sporting performance.

| Professional Outputs

The degree in Sports falls within the training area of ​​Sports, Leisure and Health, with graduates being qualified to carry out a professional activity, within the scope of the study program profile. Furthermore, it allows professional graduates to continue studying (2nd cycle of studies). The following are professional options for a degree in Sports:

  • The exercise of functions in educational contexts does not constitute, for example, a higher technical career in central, local and autonomous administration and senior management of companies or other private institutions, as well as the development of qualified independent activity;

  • The evaluation, programming and conduct of teaching and training in the area of ​​sports specialty in sports training schools, clubs, associations and federations;

  • Programming and conducting the practice of physical and sporting activities in various institutional contexts such as Autonomous Governments, Companies, Gyms, Fitness and Wellness Clubs, Active Tourism, etc.;

  • Monitoring physical and sporting activities of special populations and risk groups;

  • The assumption and/or integration of the technical management of Sports Facilities, Gyms, Sports Clubs, Physical Fitness and Health Centers, etc.;

  • The integration of teams to promote and organize events in the area of ​​sport and physical activity.

Coordination : Prof. Dr. Pedro Forte

Pedro Forte has a degree in Sports, a Masters in Exercise and Health and a PhD in Sports Sciences. Throughout his professional activity he was an instructor of physical and sports activities and a basketball and football coach. He is a researcher at the Research Center for Sport, Health and Human Development and his areas of interest are biomechanics related to health and sports performance in individual and team sports. He is a member of the team of analysts for Paralympic athlete Mário Trindade (European champion and 4th in the world rankings in his category). At a scientific level, they have published chapters and books, articles and works presented at conferences and events and collaborate with several national and international researchers. He is an editor and reviewer in national and international journals from the most prestigious publishers such as Frontiers, MDPI, Elsevier, Springer Nature and Taylor and Francis. He is Coordinator and teacher at the Sports Department at ISCE Douro.
