ISCE Douro received 1st Edition of the International Congress on Education

The 1st Edition of the International Education Congress took place last week, an event that took place on the 23rd and 24th of March and which brought several national and international experts to Penafiel to reflect on the challenges of inclusion and diversity.

The event began with the official opening session of the Congress, a moment that was attended by several personalities, including the President of ISCE Douro, Prof. Doctor Edgar Bernardo and the Vice-President of the Chamber of Penafiel, Dr. Pedro Cepeda.

The work was then continued with communications from the event's keynote speakers. Firstly, and in virtual format, Prof. Doctor Otto von Feigenblatt, Professor and Chair Graduate Education Department at Keiser University, who presented a lecture on the importance of balance between teaching, service and research in academia and, in turn, Prof. Doctor David Rodrigues, National Councilor for Education, who presented a communication on the theme "Building the airplane while flying: From Special Education to Inclusive Education".

The first day of the event featured a round table format, moderated by Prof. Doctor Ana Leal Kosmider, professor at the Department of Education at our Institute, at a time when national and international researchers addressed various topics related to inclusion and diversity in education, from food and nutritional education to the inclusion of people with disabilities in the work, and in which the participation of ISCE teachers, Prof. Doctor Filipa Coelhoso, Coordinator of the Degree in Social Education at that Institute and, also, Prof. Andreia[AA1] Varão, professor at the Department of Education at ISCE.

In turn, the second day of work began early in the morning with a moment of celebration through a cultural visit to Penafiel, led by Prof. Doctor José Meneses, professor at the Department of Education at ISCE Douro. During the afternoon, there was also time for two round tables which, once again, invited reflection from the approximately 100 participants in the event and during which Prof. Doctor Ana Raquel Aguiar, Coordinator of the Degree in Basic Education, and Prof. Doctor Cátia Vaz, Coordinator of the Degree in Social Education.

With the holding of the International Congress on Education, ISCE Douro promoted a reflection on the always difficult task of making schools an inclusive space for all, constituting an opportunity to promote the training of educators and teachers, enabling them to face the challenges of diversity and inclusion in education, with the aim of promoting a more inclusive education, capable of promoting a more fair and equal society.
